Until 31 December 2021

There are 4 types of costs that may apply to the members of the UTZ hazelnut program:

Membership fee

Members in the hazelnut program pay an annual membership fee. This amount will be shown during the registration process and in your member profile in the UTZ traceability system.

The membership fee is based on the volume of hazelnuts (UTZ and non-UTZ) purchased per calendar year, calculated in hazelnut kernels.

Category Volume in MT kernels

(MT = 1000kg)

Annual Membership fee
Small <500 € 250,-
Medium 500-3.000 € 2.000,-
Large >3.000 € 4.000,-

For the first year, the membership fee is calculated pro rata from the moment you register; you will only be invoiced for the remaining months of that year. Please note that the membership fee is not related to, or dependent on the validity of your license/certificate.

Retailers pay a fixed membership fee of €2.000,-. If the retailer is also represented as a Supply Chain Actor elsewhere in the supply chain and purchases more than 3.000 metric tons (MT) of hazelnuts in hazelnut kernels per calendar year (UTZ and non-UTZ), their annual membership fee is increased to €4.000,-.

Program fee

UTZ charges a volume-based program fee of €30 per MT of UTZ hazelnuts in hazelnut kernels to either:

  • The first buyer of UTZ certified hazelnuts who only holds a Chain of Custody standard certificate, or
  • The certificate holder of both Code of Conduct and Chain of Custody who purchases UTZ certified hazelnuts from another Code holder

Please also see our list of certified hazelnut producers and certified hazelnut supply chain actors.

UTZ offers a discount to first buyers that purchase more than 3000 MT of UTZ certified hazelnuts per calendar year.

If you are the first buyer of the UTZ certified hazelnuts, you will negotiate directly with the producer or producer group on the UTZ premium – an additional cash amount paid above the market price you would pay for a similar conventional (non-certified/non-verified) product. The premium needs to be indicated in the UTZ traceability system.

Audit costs

If a certification audit is required to verify compliance with the Chain of Custody standard, please contact one of the approved Certification Bodies (CBs). UTZ does not set the price for audit costs, nor interferes in the negotiation process, but we recommend that you contact various CBs to get the best possible offer (availability, costs, etc.).

The membership and program fee are the only costs that UTZ charges to members in order to support and sustain our hazelnut program. There is no fee charged for use of the UTZ label on finished products.

After 1 January 2022

As the Rainforest Alliance’s 2020 Certification Program is rolled out, we have made some changes to the fee structure of the hazelnut program, to bring it in line with all our other programs.

This means the former UTZ membership fee no longer applies from 1 January 2022, and that the program fee of EUR 30/MT hazelnut kernels and the membership fee will be replaced by a total royalty of EUR 42/MT hazelnut kernels. The royalty is charged once along the supply chain to the importer.

You too can join the UTZ hazelnut program.
