The Rainforest Alliance extends its deepest condolences to the families of those who were killed in the September 28 tsunami in Sulawesi, Indonesia, following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. We have been watching with dismay as the death toll rises in an area where we have worked for many years. We are also deeply concerned about the long-term effects of this disaster, which has already destroyed the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Indonesians.

We have made contact with all Rainforest Alliance staff and partners in the area and will remain in close communication with them. It is possible that Rainforest Alliance projects with smallholder farmers in the region will be delayed due to the damage inflicted by the earthquake.

We wish safety and strength to the people of Sulawesi and those in neighboring regions impacted by the quake. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide support to our ground team there as needed.
